Contact Number:(434) 455-2769 What are Prevention Services?     Prevention services are designed to focus on providing a proactive environment which empowers individuals, families, communities and systems to meet the challenges of life events and transitions by creating and implementing conditions that promote healthy behaviors and lifestyles. What do we do?  •  "Too Good for Drugs" SODA (Students Organized For Developing Attitudes) is a program in which high school juniors and seniors are trained to work with sixth graders on developing decision-making and other life skills.  •  FAST (Families and Schools Together) is an innovative and collaborative prevention and parent involvement program in which whole families gather and participate in specific, fun, research-based activities aimed at strengthening families and empowering parents.  •  Girl Power! is a substance abuse prevention program for girls between the ages of 11 and 14. It is a combination of strong "no use" messages about alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs with an emphasis on providing opportunities for girls to build skills and self-confidence in academics, arts, sports, and volunteering.  •  TGFV (Too Good For Violence) is a seven-week evidence based violence prevention program. This program covers a variety of topics aimed to develop skills for conflict resolution, anger management, effective communication, and respect for others.  •  Community Presentations include a variety of topics aimed at reducing substance abuse through education and skill building.  •  Community Coalition Representation allows us to actively participate on such coalitions as GIFTS (Gain Independence From Tobacco), Safe Schools, Marriage Before the Carriage, Safe Kids, Community-Wide Youth Collaborative (CWYC), School Health Advisory Boards, Partners in Prevention (PIP), Campbell Child Development Task Force, Bedford Community Coalition, Bedford Substance Abuse Task Force, School Resource Officers (SRO) Crime Prevention Meetings, Virginia Associations Of Community Services Boards (VACSB) Council, and Safe Schools Committee. Who do they work with?     Our main focus is service to children, teens, and families through the school system or recreation centers, but we also serve the whole community directly through presentations and coalition work. How do I make a referral?     School representatives make referrals for school based programs. All other program referrals can be made either by contacting the Prevention Administrative Assistant or the Prevention Program Manager.
