What services are available through Diagnostic Evaluation & Assessment Services?

Child Assessment - includes biopsychosocial interview and extensive information gathering and review of history.

Family Assessment - includes in-home assessment and behavioral rating scales.

Parenting Role Assessment - specifically assesses the parents’ comfort with and effectiveness in the parenting role, and their perception of their child.

Substance Abuse Assessment - Uses the GAIN (SAMHSA preferred tool) for ages 12-18 years.

Psychological Testing (Child) - may include IQ/achievement, personality, emotional, psychopathology

Psychological Testing (Parent) - may include IQ, personality, emotional, psychopathology

Psychiatric Evaluation - includes an extensive review of previous and current functioning, diagnostic impression and recommendations re the use of psychotropic medications.


What do we do ?

The Diagnostic Evaluation services described above are client centered, family focused, strength based, and assist in clarifying the strengths, needs and potential of children, adolescents and adults. Emphasis is placed on providing consistent, comprehensive recommendations that provide guidance for treatment planning and delivery. This approach supports the philosophy that treatment that is integrated and tailored to meet the needs and utilize the strengths of an individual child and family has the greatest probability of being successful.

Who do we work with?

Children and adolescents from approximately age 3 through 18 for whom there are significant questions regarding their intellectual, emotional, social, behavioral, and/or personality functioning, and for whom it is felt that clarification of the diagnostic picture would improve service planning and delivery. The area of services includes the cities of Lynchburg and Bedford, and the counties of Amherst, Appomattox, Bedford, and Campbell.

How do I make a referral?

Diagnostic Evaluation Services can be accessed by calling (434) 455-3077 or (434) 847-8019, you can also make a referral by completing a Child & Family Diagnostic Evaluation/Psychological Testing referral form. Services are accessed through the Emergency Services/Access Team, by direct referral from clinical staff already working with a client, or by direct referral from a FAPT or CPMT.
