What are County Services?

  • Intake
  • Case management services
  • Individual and group psychotherapy
  • Emergency services
  • Crisis intervention services
  • Psychiatric and nursing services
  • Medication management
  • Prescreening for admission to state facilities
  • Psychosocial rehabilitation services

What do we do?

Intake services are preceded by what we call orientation. During orientation a counselor talks with potential clients face-to-face to evaluate whether they meet criteria for services through Central Virginia Community Services and if this is the best place for the service they need. If it is and criteria are met, an intake is scheduled. During intake, a fuller case history is taken in order to establish a file on the client.

Case Management services include ongoing monitoring, linking to other services, coordinating service, advocate services, and/or supportive counseling.

Psychotherapy services are offered to consumers who need more in-depth counseling to gain insights, learn new coping strategies, explore unresolved childhood trauma, or the like.

Emergency services are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. During regular work hours (8:30 AM - 5:00 PM Monday through Friday), these services may be accessed by calling the center or going to the Bedford Memorial Emergency Room (Bedford residents only) or Lynchburg General Emergency Room. All other times, emergency services are available through the Bedford Memorial or Lynchburg General Emergency Rooms. or the like.

Crisis Intervention services are available to consumers currently receiving case management or psychotherapy.

Psychiatric and Nursing services are provided by a psychiatrist and nurse who are available on specifically scheduled days each month. Our psychiatrist determines the course of treatment while nursing services support the psychiatrist's work through obtaining vital statistics, medications, and blood work as needed.

Medication Management services are an integral part of ongoing case management and nursing services. Consumers who require assistance with maintaining daily medication boxes, medication pick-up, or routine lab work are given such help either through our case management or case management supports staff.

Prescreening services include a clinical evaluation by certified prescreeners to determine if someone in crisis requires voluntary or involuntary hospitalization, outpatient intervention, or some other type of service.

Psychosocial rehabilitation services are provided on a limited basis at some county centers. These services include limited day support and/or therapeutic activities. Please call the center for more information or to check for availability.
