What do we do?

     NeWays Adolescent Substance Abuse Treatment Services provides a continuum of substance abuse treatment services for adolescents and their families. We serve the cities of Lynchburg and Bedford and the counties of Amherst, Amherst, Appomattox, Campbell and Bedford.

Services and therapeutic interventions include the following:

• Substance Abuse Assessments are provided for persons age 18 and younger in Planning District II. A psychosocial assessment, Family Assessment, Subtle Adolescent Substance Screening Inventory (SASSI-2) and drug urine screen are completed on each adolescent and their family referred for a substance abuse assessment. Information regarding the adolescent’s presenting problem, history of and current substance use, family history, and current educational, social and legal status is obtained from the adolescent and parent/guardian. Information is also obtained from the referral source to support the assessment process. Upon completion of the assessment, the adolescent and family are provided with a verbal summary of the findings and a recommendation for substance abuse services, as indicated.

• Adolescent Substance Abuse Education Groups are provided for adolescents who present with a history of or current experimentation pattern of substance use. The education groups are held on a weekly basis, for approximately eight (8) weeks and are designed to increase the adolescent’s understanding of the potential physical, emotional, psychological, spiritual, recreational, social, legal and familial effects of substance abuse and dependency. It is also designed to assess risk factors in continued use and to motivate the adolescent to quit using substances. Randon drug urine screens are obtained.

• Adolescent Substance Abuse Education Groups are provided for adolescents 13-14 years of age who present with a current or recent pattern of substance abuse or dependency. The Early Treatment program uses the Seven Challenges Program, which is evidence based and proven successful in motivating adolescent to reduce or quit using substances. Adolescents are enrolled in the program two (2) to three (3) times per week, based on the intensity of their treatment needs. Each sessions includes education, workbook readings and assignments and group activities. The program is geared to meet the individual learning needs of the adolescents and lasts between eight (8) and twelve (12) weeks. Random drug urine screens are obtained.

• Relapse Prevention/Continuing Care Groups are provided for adolescents who have completed the Early Treatment Program to provide continued education and support in addressing issues arising during early recovery. Adolescents participate in weekly group sessions for approximately twelve (12) weeks. Random drug urine screens are obtained.

• Anger Management Groups are provided for adolescents, 12-17 years of age, who present with substance abuse related anger management problems. Adolescents may be enrolled in the anger management groups at the same time as they attend the substance abuse program or following their completion of the substance abuse program. Group sessions provide education on anger styles, triggers for anger and alternative coping skills for anger. Adolescents are also provided the opportunity to practice new anger management styles. Group sessions are held on a weekly basis for eleven (11) weeks.

• Individual Counseling is offered for all levels of service to adolescents and their family members for all levels of service needs when it is determined that a group setting is not the most appropriate treatment milieu for the client. Individual therapy is also used to provide therapeutic interventions for adolescents who are having difficulty in making progress in their treatment, to address sensitive individual issues or to review treatment progress or planning.

• Family Counseling is offered to provide family members with education regarding substance abuse and to address family issues and parenting needs.

• Community Education sessions are available for community organizations who desire to learn more about adolescent substance abuse.

• School-Based Substance Abuse Education Programs are designed and presented based on individual school’s needs and requests. (fee for service)

Who do we work with?

Substance abuse services are provided for persons eighteen (18) years of age and younger in Planning District II who will benefit from any of the levels of care or services that we offer.
